Description

We are seeking an outstanding Group Manager to join our senior leadership team and help shape the future of children’s social care in Lewisham.

Lewisham is proud to be the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary and a wave 2 Pathfinder authority, leading on national reforms through the Families First for Children programme. Our borough is vibrant, diverse, and ambitious for every child.

The role

This is a high-impact strategic role focused on securing safe, high-quality, and stable placements for children and young people in Lewisham. You’ll lead the development and delivery of the council’s placement sufficiency strategy during a time of significant national reform and market challenge.
You will:

  • Oversee the commissioning of placements, including fostering, residential, and supported accommodation.
  • Navigate the evolving legislative landscape, including reforms to supported accommodation for 16–17-year-olds.
  • Shape and manage partnerships with independent providers and regional frameworks.
  • Ensure placements are outcomes-focused, cost-effective, and compliant with statutory standards.
  • Drive innovation in placement planning, including development of local authority residential provision.

This is an ideal role for someone with deep strategic insight, budget management skills, and the ability to lead complex systems with a strong focus on improving outcomes for vulnerable children.

Enhanced DBS check required.

About You

We’re looking for confident, experienced leaders with:

  • Proven operational management beyond team manager level.
  • Strong strategic planning and service development expertise.
  • Knowledge of current social work legislation, including Working Together 2023.
  • A child-focused, relational approach rooted in Signs of Safety.
  • A Social Work qualification and current registration with Social Work England.

You’ll be managing 3 – 5 teams and a small budget, with 3 – 5 direct reports. These roles require inspirational leadership and a commitment to continuous practice improvement.
